Only two hours from Romsey, this area offers climbing in a wide range of grades. There are single- and multi-pitch routes and some real gems in idyllic locations high above the river Wye.

  6. Hi folks,

    Hearing that the camp site that we usually use near the Roaches is booked for the weekend that we are planning to be there I thought I would have a mini-panic about the Wye Valley trip. I have provisionally booked the Elmsdale Camping site near Symonds Yat where we have stayed before. I have booked the site for 12 people from Friday until Sunday (i.e. 2 nights each). This includes the 8 people who are identified ‘up front’ plus Charlotte, Roland, Rachel and a contingency place (I tried adding you to the list but there seems to be a problem with saving the change – ‘Your subscription with license key 78958AC8-11FFBC57-5A5D9D5F-3600A75F is expired. Please go to your Colibri account and renew the license’.)

    The cost is £11 per night per person. This is not as cheap as it used to be but I guess like all similar sites the last two years have been pretty tough going. I need to pay a 50% deposit to secure the booking so can everyone please confirm that they are still planning to attend.

  8. Hi Everyone,

    Just to confirm I am still going. I will be heading up on Friday and climbing Sat/Sun. I will also just confirm with Elmsdale campsite that I can book in my van which I will be sleeping in, just in case they charge differently for this. Looking forward to it. Lets hope the weather is good!!!

  9. Even though I am not going on this trip, I have updated the “who’s going” list for Patrick as requested by him, so everyone is now listed. Patrick was clearly not to be trusted with access to his own meet, even though he is a Committee member (without a real role!). We have to be so careful these days!!

    • Thanks Charlotte. I have a provisional booking at the camp site but will now put down a deposit since most people have confirmed attendance.

  13. I have paid the deposit for the camp site for all the people who have confirmed that they are coming on the trip. The three who have not confirmed (you know who you are!) needn’t panic as Karen, the site owner, said that they could be added later if necessary.

    Here is the email Karen sent me which provides information on the site:

    If you are part of a group or camping with friends, please ensure you and the group ALL check in with reception BEFORE you join the others.

    Please note, open fires of any sort and fire pits are not permitted but we do have chimineas for hire. Also, we do operate a strict before 8am and after 10.30pm quiet policy (any children should be with you and quiet chatting only at your tent/van after this time so your neighbours are not disturbed). Please check these rules are acceptable with all members of your booking.

    Electric Cars – Please do not charge electric cars on the pitch. We are able to provide a charging area. Ask for details on arrival.

    Please would you mind sending the deposit by bank transfer with your name as a reference or a cheque, and I will advise of receipt. A card machine is available but only for on site transactions where cardholder is present.

  15. Hi guys. I think I can get to the campsite in the Wye Valley on the Friday but am struggling to get home again on Sunday. Is anyone able to give me a lift home please? And if I am able to go will there be room in a vehicle if we have to drive to the climb site? Thank you! 🤞🤞🤞

  16. I have booked the Cross Keys Inn for nine people (my best guess at how many will be wanting to eat there) for 19:00 on the 9th and 10th (the Friday and Saturday). This is just under a mile from the camp site and is the nearest source of food available; that said, we have eaten there many times before and the service and food have been pretty good.

    • Hi Juan, I am not sure where we will be climbing on Saturday but it will probably be Wintours Leap or Symonds Yat. I will drop you a line with time and directions when I know where we are going.

  18. OK, so we seem to have the important stuff sorted (accommodation and evening feeding!). So the next question is what would folks like to do on the trip? Looking at the attendance list I know that some people will have a good idea and they will sort themselves out but what about everybody else? The crags in the Wye Valley are mostly trad climbs (i.e. requiring leader placed protection) and many are multi-pitch. The grades range from Diff upwards but are all in really great settings (in my biased opinion). The general plan is that we all have fun and stay safe. So what would you like to do?

    On a personal level I would like to do some lead climbing HVD. Also seconding VS/HVS if thats possible?? Hope I have got that correct.
    My climbing ability seems good, but my technical ability/placing protection needs more practise!!

    • Thanks Clive. There are a load of climbs in the lower grades that you could lead; Central Buttress Route I (VD) and Central Rib Route I (S) at Wintours Leap are both brilliant climbs and straddle the HVD grade that you are looking for. The VS and HVS seconds may be harder to deliver on as I am not sure who would be available to lead them (any volunteers?) – I am way out of shape at the moment and anyway have only ever led a few HVS climbs. Failing that, there are a number of HVSs that I have top roped in the past so maybe we can work something out.

      • Sounds good to me Patrick. It is all learning for me so whatever we can do I am sure we can find something to suit, and whatever we do will be enjoyable. You never know there may even be a volunteer to try!!
