CHANGE of DATE and Accommodation! This Annual trip to the snow clad mountains of North Wales (hopefully) will allow any RoCs member to experience some easy winter mountaineering challenges without having to travel up to Scotland. We will now be using the Barn Hut near to Capel Curig on the A5 which we have used previously. It is booked for Thursday 26th – Sunday 29th January (3 nights) and sleeps 30 people, but is probably only good for about 15 max as the kitchen and living areas plus the washing facilities are not really sensible for 30 people! Any members are welcome to join us and you will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow plus some logs for the wood burning stove to heat the hut. All kitchen and cooking gear is supplied so just bring your own food. The Hut info can be found at www.nlmc.co.uk/huts/guest-barn/
Please post below if you wish to join us, stating when you are arriving and departing. The cost for each person is £10 per night regardless of numbers or how many nights you stay in total. You do not have to pay until after the trip and you make your payment to RoCs bank. RoCs will then pay the Hut owners in one transaction.

As it is a winter trip, bring suitable winter warm and waterproof clothing, a decent pair of mountaineering boots, crampons and a walking axe as a minimum set of gear. Quite often the snow does not settle (or even arrive) so then it can be a bit wet and wild. Be prepared to bring waterproof trousers and jacket and a set of dry clothes for the pub in the evening.

Travel plans will be confirmed nearer the time depending on who is attending. Post if you are interested in joining the Winter crew on this mad adventure full of fun, possibly some winter mountaineering and more than likely a good time in the pub.

I’ll come along (unless the weather is apocalyptic!), Thursday to Sunday 🙂
I am now unable to go due to family commitments out of my control. My fault for changing the date to allow us the use of the hut! Patrick is now the meets organiser to communicate with the Hut owners to get the door code prior to going and to be able to sort out final payments after the event. RoCs have paid the £80 deposit so once the Hut owners know how many people stayed and for how many number of nights, at £10 per person per night, that is the total cost to rent the hut. Do this after you return. If everyone then pays RoCs their share at that rate, then Helen can then pay the Hut owners, less the £80 deposit. Apologies for letting you down but there is nothing I can do to change this. Have a great trip, and hope you get some good weather (snow rather than rain).
For many years Pete and I (and on several occasions that means only Pete and I!) have shown the hard side of winter RoCs tripping and have chosen to camp rather than suffer the indignities of a bunk house. If anyone has an inclination to camp then I would be happy to join them, otherwise I will reluctantly join the bunk house contingent.
I may be able to join you for a day or 2 of soggy scrambling. Feel free to message me before hand and i can give you a on the ground weather report.
Thanks Sam, that would be very helpful.
I’m planning to come, unless the weather is really awful. In which case I’m happy to still pay my share of the bunkhouse costs. That’s how much of a wuss I am.
Whoop whoop!
If the weather is that awful then we can always drink coffee then go to the pub. That said, it would have to be pretty awful not to get something done (there is no such thing as bad weather …).
So,
Question 1 – is everyone sorted for transport? Team Ro Ra are travelling up in Ro’s roller skate to my place in Shropshire and we will be heading up from there in convoy. I guess that we will arrive at the hut a bit after mid day on Thursday.
Question 2 – What are everyone’s aspirations for the trip? The Trinity face of Snowdon would be fun (graded winter climbs) but I think that the chances of it being both in condition and safe are relatively small.
Question 3 – Has everyone got all the gear that they need to keep themselves warm and safe in a potentially winter environment? I have a few spare items of equipment that I would be happy to lend but only one walking axe.
Looking forward to meeting up in a bit over a week’s time.
So Hannah John and I will head up early Thursday morning. Ideally winter stuff would be great though unlikely. Otherwise some interesting scrambling or maybe easy climbing if sufficiently dry (unlikely!). Got all I need, for winter stuff only a walking axe not technical axes but should be sufficient
I’m with Jim on the aspirations side of things. I’ve never done any actual winter climbing, and I’m hoping that the lack of suitable conditions will mean I can pretend that I’m disappointed that I don’t have to.
I’ve got a walking axe, and some swanky new winter boots, and microspikes, but only very shite crampons.
And I’m not planning to eat at the pub every night. Happy to cook for anyone who feels similarly not bothered by pub food. I’ve just found an unopened bottle of very nice malt, so perhaps we can have haggis.
Sounds awesome 🙂
I have set up a WhatsApp group for the meet but can’t find John or Sam’s addresses on WhatsApp. Are you on WhatsApp chaps? If so, where ca n I find you?
