This is the first of our biannual RoCs weekend meets to the delights of the Peak District National Park. We will be camping at the usual site near Hathersage at the North Lees (Peak District National Park) camp site. This is about 1 mile due North of Hathersage. This meet is suitable for all members as it is ideal for beginners and the more experienced climbers in the club. If you have never climbed outside on real rock, we can take you up some really easy nice rock. There is a wide choice of gritstone crags to choose from, some with a few multi pitch routes, but mainly all single pitch with a short walk in.

The campsite is a small friendly site with wash and shower facilities. It also has some wooden Pods if you prefer not to use a tent. All you will need for a Pod is a sleeping mat and bag plus your own cooking gear, just as you would for a tent. There is heating and lighting in the Pods. If you wish to use a Pod, please book this in advance yourself. A deposit may be required for a booking. Please indicate to me if you are camping or in a Pod. At the moment booking in advance is required for camping so you will need to do this yourselves, in groups up to 5 per pitch with a car. If you decide to come with someone who has already booked their pitch with a car, you can add yourself by booking a pitch without a car.

The contact details for the site are 01433 650838. or their website is  www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/things-to-do/camping/camping-northlees . To get to the campsite from Hathersage, go west on the A6187 Main Street and TR before the railway bridge up Jaggers Lane, then TR up Coggers Lane for about 1/2 mile, then TR into Birley Lane. After about 1/2 mile North Lees site is on your left just before a left hand bend. There is a wooden gate (often closed) to enter the site. Ignore the “Campsite full” sign as we will have a booking for Romsey Climbers under my name. We will be car sharing as much as possible due to the limited parking spaces and to save fuel costs.

Hathersage has a couple of pubs, and we will use the Robin Hood pub in Hathersage. There are also food shops and a few Outdoor gear shops so all you need for a weekend away with RoCs.  If you prefer the luxury of a proper bed ???? then there are B&B’s, hotels and Youth Hostels in and around Hathersage, but book early to ensure a room. Be aware if you choose to book accommodation and we have to cancel the meet at the last moment due to extreme bad weather, you may loose your deposit with your booking.

Bring along some wet weather walking gear as well, (water proof coat, over trousers and walking boots) just in case the weather turns damp and we decide to go for a bit of a bog trot up on the hills. You will also need to bring along breakfast and any cooking gear required, food for mid-day lunch as there are no food facilities at the crags. We will be eating at a pub in the evenings.

  1. Just to be clear, due to the way bookings are done each person or traveling group will need book their own slot either camping or in a van. They only have a few van slots so get in quick!! If anyone wishes to travel up with me in my car (campers) let me know and I can book us all in with my car as we have to pay for the car as well as the camping slot, then we can sort out who owes me what on the day. Any payments to the campsite are non returnable and you need to pay in full, so if you do not go you lose all your money!

  2. I may be able to make this. Maybe assume I’m not and I’ll let you know a few days before if I can come, Pete. I’m happy to phone around to add my name to any bookings you make if I do come along

  3. I am assuming everyone listed here is still keen to go. I am ok to drive and can offer a lift to one or two people from Fareham/Romsey/Southampton area, probably going up Thursday morning or Friday morning depending on who wishes to travel with me. Can you all let me know what your plans are and how you are getting there, as I will need to at least make and pay for a booking for me and my car plus any passengers with me. Other drivers and campers/camper van users will need to make and pay for their own booking on the North Lees campsite. Do not leave it too late otherwise they will be full, and it is a pain when we are split between North Lees and other sites near to Hope as happened last time. I plan to eat at the Little John Pub in Hathersage each night.

  4. Hi Pete,

I will be coming up Friday evening and heading back Sunday evening due to work commitments. Still sleeping in the van for both nights and eating at the pub!! I will contact you on the way up on Friday evening if thats ok?

    • Hi Clive, ok can you make your own booking with the campsite please. Will you require a place in the pub Friday evening for a meal or just a drink. I will be booking a table soon for all the nights (Thursday, Friday & Saturday). No worries if you get there a bit late, I think they serve food till about 9 ish. Do you have a rope to bring.

    • Great Ro. I will check to see if Tim is going. If not I will come with you. We can use my car if it is bigger? I will let you know about booking once Tim has confirmed or not if he is going.

  5. So we have a plan!! I will be travelling with Ro & Rachel Thursday morning and returning Sunday afternoon. Clive is arriving Friday eve and returning Sunday afternoon.
Kirsty is arriving Friday eve and returning Sunday afternoon.
Both Tim and Ivan will make a decision nearer the time as to if they are able to go or not, so they will be making their own arrangements for booking and travelling.

I will make bookings for the pub to cover us all just in case Ivan and Tim can make it, so I will book 5 places Thursday night and 7 places Friday and Saturday night at The Little John Pub in Hathersage.

  6. Was about to comment with my plans, but you’ve beaten me to it, Pete! Yup, Fri eve arrival leaving Sun pm. Looking forward to climbing and catching up 😀

    • Thanks Kirsty. Do you have a rope and any lead gear you can bring please. Not sure how much leading I can do for 3 days on my own!! Not sure if Clive does leading on Trad. I have booked camping places for myself, Ro and Rachel. Depending on what time you get there Friday we may already be in the Little John Pub in Hathersage. We will reserve a table place for you and Clive Friday and Saturday night.

  7. As there are at least 5 of us going, just to be sure about what you will need, can anyone who has a rope (or a pair of half ropes) and any lead gear please bring them along so I do not have to do all the leading for 3 days! For the newer members to Trad climbing outside, you will need a climbing helmet and also a nut key and belay plate even if you are not planning on doing any leading. If you do not have a helmet or a nut key at the moment you can borrow the club one from Duncan Patient, our gear officer.

  8. I have booked a table in my name at the Little John Pub in Hathersage for 6-30 pm each night, for 5 people on Thursday and 7 people on Friday and Saturday. These numbers are so that if Ivan and Tim do decide to go there will be a space for them. If anyone else wishes to join us at the last minute, please let me know so I can adjust the pub bookings to suit and add you to our WhatsApp group chat page. You will need to make your own campsite (or other) bookings your self. At the moment myself, Ro & Rachel are booked into the North Lees campsite Thursday to Sunday, and both Kirsty and Clive from Friday to Sunday. Pete
