North Wales (POSTPONED) – Scrambles & Easy Climbs

12/10/2018 – 14/10/2018 all-day

This meet has been postponed due to bad weather. The meet may be re-scheduled for another weekend soon.  If interested, please comment stating which weekend(s) you would prefer.

This meet is based at the climbing hut of the Merseyside Mountaineering Club, known as Cae’r Fran, grid ref SH570595, about 1km from Llanberis.
Formerly a shepherd’s cottage, Cae’r Fran has been refurbished and extended and is subject to a programme of continual improvement. The Hut has four dormitories including one for the exclusive use of women, a dining/sitting room, drying room, boot room, a large kitchen and separate male and female toilet and shower facilities. The cost is £7 per person per night (cheaper than camping!). Those wishing to use the hut must provide payment before their booking is confirmed. For those who prefer camping, there is a campsite 300m away, at SH573594.

Here is some info from Tom:-
We will have the hut to ourselves I believe (there is a chance the Merseyside club turn up last minute but they have their own bedroom). The hut is really well equipped it has hot showers, a drying room, a full kitchen with plates, utensils, and all of the other bits you’d expect in a kitchen. I’m not sure if people want to cook or eat out so if anyone has a preference let me know.
The accommodation is a fair walk from Llanberis town probably 20 mins downhill and 45 back up.
The address for the hut is Address : Cae’r Fran, Llanberis, Caernarfon LL55 4BB Grid ref: SH 570593
Approach: From Llanberis Pass: Enter Llanberis High St, Turn LEFT at Convenience shop.(Capel Goch Rd) Turn RIGHT at the Chapel, (Fron Goch), go up the hill, take 2nd LEFT into narrow mountain road, pass a Care Centre. Continue up road through a gate. THIS GATE MUST BE KEPT CLOSED AT ALL TIMES.
From Caernarfon Direction : Go down the High St. Past the SPAR Shop to the convenience shop turn RIGHT (Capel Goch Road follow above directions.

Parking: (Unauthorised) on lay-by after the gate on left. Further parking is available 200 yds up the road on the left. And higher up on right. The sheep pen opposite the lay-by can also be used. It may be necessary to move the dividers.

Approach to the Hut: from the lay-by opposite the sheep pen, is the path to the hut. Pass through a gate. Cae’r Fran is the second building after the gate. Entrance is at the side (Not the front door) the adjacent barn buildings are out of bounds.

As the website suggests this weekend is geared towards scrambles and low grade, easy climbing. Weather dependent I’m keen to do both the Snowdon Horseshoe and the Cwm Bochlwyd Horseshoe. Both are classic Welsh scrambles that will mean we are out on the hill moving for a prolonged period (around 5/6 hours each).
If people want to head to a crag in the local area and do some low grade stuff as well then that’s fine too.

Thank you all for stating roughly when you’ll be arriving. We will be there from Thursday evening and will hopefully get out for the day on Friday. We will aim to be back at the hut from 17:00 to welcome everyone.
We need to vacate the hut by 10:00 on the Sunday and will need to clean it out before we depart.

    Hi all,

Given the horrendous weather forecast regarding rain, floods and wind I think it is sensible for us to Cancel/Postpone this meet.

If there is anyone still wanting to go and they want to get the key for the hut from me they are more than welcome.

Such a shame as we were really looking forward to it but I think the weather gods have won out on this one.

I will check with the hut to see if we can move the deposit to another weekend and we’ll plan forwards from there.

    Hi Tom,
I am free on the weekend of the 3/4 November. Also available on the weekend 1/2 & 15/16 December. May be a bit cold for some people then!

The AGM is on Friday the 16th November so that is not really a good week end to have a trip as usually lots of members (including the Committee!!) attend the Friday meeting so will not be able to get away that weekend.

  4. Charlotte Rimmington says:

    Hi Tom and Jenny,
I would like to go on the North wales trip as your thinking of changing the date.
Best weekend for me is 3rd/4th of November that weekend is best for me.
